Development of the VW Group software

Volkswagen developed computer software to alter how a vehicle’s engine performed in order to ensure compliance with the appropriate regulations governing the emissions of NOx.  The software used to control the affected engines contained a code which was able to detect when a car was undergoing emissions tests, and alter the level of emissions produced accordingly.

The effect of this was (and is) that the cars appeared to pass the standardised emissions test under test conditions but were programmed to switch to a different ‘road mode’ during day-to-day use at which point a much higher level of emissions was produced.
