UK legal action against Škoda and Volkswagen over the emissions scandal has been launched.

Current or previous owners of the 1.2 million UK cars affected by the VW emissions scandal (including Škoda) can finally take legal action in the UK courts against VW.  Affected cars include: VW, Seat, Audi and Skodas with 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesel engines manufactured between 2009 and 2015.

UK law firm Harcus Sinclair is taking the case against VW to the High Court on behalf of UK car owners.  People can join at www.vwemissionsaction.com  and there is no cost to joining. Over 1.2 million car owners of VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda are potentially eligible for compensation, expected to be in the region of several thousand pounds per car.

Reasons to join the legal action include holding the company accountable for having deceived consumers and the damage done to both people’s health and the environment caused by these highly polluting cars. The case is funded by third party funder, Therium Capital Management, so UK consumers will not have to pay for the legal costs.

Harcus Sinclair’s application for a Group litigation Order, which is the first step in the legal process, is being heard in the High Court on 30 January. Harcus Sinclair is the lead solicitor in what will be a US style class action where a large number of UK consumers come together to take legal action against the company. Harcus Sinclair is collaborating with other solicitors including Slater and Gordon to seek redress on behalf of as many affected UK car owners as possible and secure the best possible redress.

About the case:

In September 2015, it was revealed that the Volkswagen Group (including Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda) had manufactured and sold around 11 million vehicles fitted with software that lowered NOx emissions when tested, to ensure that they complied with government emissions standards. 1.2 million of these vehicles were sold in the UK alone. NOx emissions, according to the government Department for Rural Affairs, cause 23,000 premature deaths in the UK each year.

Are you eligible?

If your car was manufactured by Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT or Škoda and it is:

  • a 1.2, 1.6 or 2.0 litre diesel vehicle
  • made between 2009 and 2015, and
  • you purchased, leased or acquired it (new or second hand) before 1st of January 2016

You may be eligible to take legal action.

Here are five reasons you should join the action.

Taking legal action will discourage this type of corporate behaviour and help to ensure that companies don’t put the public’s health at risk.

NOx is a pollutant. It contributes to acid rain, global warming and respiratory conditions, such as childhood asthma. An increase in the level of emissions only serves to increase these dangers.

If you have an affected vehicle, the likelihood is that you overpaid for it. The resale value of your car may also be affected.

Joining the legal action against Volkswagen is straightforward. You will be represented by Harcus Sinclair and Slater and Gordon who are leading the action against VW. Once you have provided your details (including the necessary information about your car) we will proceed with the case on your behalf at no cost to you.

A company found to have been dishonest to its customers should be held to account for their actions and be penalised.
